      A few reasons 🙂

First, I really, really wanted to do a PhD. I love science, and I wanted to do my own research. I also kinda want to be able to call myself a doctor… >_>

Second, there weren’t a lot of PhDs going near where I’m living. Well, very few that I’d be qualified for, anyway, I couldn’t do a PhD in engineering for example!

Third, When I had a look at the short list of PhDs I was qualified for, this was one of the most interesting ones. I applied for a couple of them, but this is the one I ended up getting. I actually got it while at the interview for a slightly different PhD on a disease called cystic fibrosis.

Fourth, When I was offered the job, my supervisors didn’t have a specific job for me. There was a huge amount of research they wanted to get done, and I was the first person they’d hired for that subject, so I got to pick and choose some of the research I liked the most!

It was the best balance of having an overall goal, but being allowed some wiggle room in which projects I did to get there. 🙂
