Yes the Sun will explode in about 5 billion years (5000 million). Another question that has to be asked is, will humans still be on our little blue planet Earth at that time? Even if we are, we will probably have found a new and safer planet to live on (one that the Sun will not destroy!).

The Milky Way is safe. The sun is one of thousands of millions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy and will be one of many stars too explode and without affecting the galaxy. The sun is as small to the Milky Way as a cell is to your body. And one cell of your body disappearing would not have much affect on you!
